Thread: Propecia Dosage Question - 1mg vs. 5mg?

Posted By: BaldAndBound (23 minutes ago)

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with hair loss for a while now and my doctor suggested I start taking Propecia. But, there's a bit of confusion about the dosage. Should I be starting with the lower dose of 1mg or go straight to the higher dose of 5mg? I'm a bit nervous about jumping into something without fully understanding it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi BaldAndBound,

I've been on Propecia for a few years now and started with the 1mg dose. It's important to remember that Propecia is typically prescribed at 1mg daily because this has been shown to be effective in clinical trials. The 5mg option is usually not recommended unless specifically advised by your doctor, as higher doses might come with additional risks or side effects.

Start with the lower dose and see how you feel over time. It's a good idea to have regular check-ins with your dermatologist too! If you notice no significant improvement after several months, they can advise if a change in dosage is needed.

Hello BaldAndBound,

I wanted to add my two cents. My doctor initially prescribed 1mg of Propecia and I've been taking it for about six months now. So far, so good! No noticeable side effects, and I've seen some regrowth in areas where hair was thinning.

Starting with the lower dose is generally recommended because it allows your body to adjust more gradually to the medication. It's also easier to monitor any potential side effects this way. If you don't see results after six months or so (since Propecia can take a while to work), then you and your doctor might consider adjusting the dosage.

Hi BaldAndBound,

As someone with experience in dermatology, I want to emphasize what my fellow members have already said. The standard dose for Propecia is 1mg per day, as this has been shown to be both safe and effective in clinical studies.

The primary active ingredient of Propecia, finasteride, works by blocking DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is responsible for hair loss. Starting with the 1mg dose allows you to see how your body reacts to the medication without unnecessarily exposing yourself to higher doses that may not be needed or could lead to more side effects.

Monitor your progress over several months and keep in touch with your doctor. They can help adjust your treatment plan if necessary based on your results and any concerns about side effects.

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate all the advice and insights. It's reassuring to know that starting with 1mg is a common recommendation and helps me feel more comfortable going forward.

I'll be sure to keep track of any changes in my hair and talk to my dermatologist if anything comes up or if I don't see results after some time. Fingers crossed this works out well!
