Forum Post: Understanding Propecia From Canada
Posted by: CuriousCat
Hey everyone,
I was just diagnosed with male pattern baldness and my doc suggested Propecia. I've heard it's available from Canadian pharmacies online but wasn't sure how safe or effective it is compared to getting it here in the States. Anyone have experience taking Propecia from Canada? Would love some insight!

Hi CuriousCat,
Great question! It’s important when considering any medication, especially something like Propecia (finasteride), to ensure you're getting it from a reliable source and that you fully understand its benefits and potential side effects.
Propecia works by inhibiting an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase, which reduces the production of DHT—a hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. When sourced from reputable Canadian pharmacies, Propecia is often just as effective as any other version because it adheres to stringent manufacturing standards similar to those in the U.S.
However, always make sure you're purchasing from a licensed pharmacy with a valid license and prescription requirements. This helps ensure safety and quality of the medication.
Have you discussed potential side effects or long-term use concerns with your physician? It's crucial for maintaining good health while undergoing any treatment.

Thanks DocInWhite!
I've been on Propecia from a trusted Canadian pharmacy for about six months now. The first couple of months didn't show much difference, but I started noticing a significant decrease in hair loss after that. My scalp even feels more active with new growth coming in.
Of course, everyone's experience is different and it depends on how advanced your balding is when you start. But for me, the results have been pretty positive.
Any thoughts from others who have taken Propecia or any other tips?

That’s great to hear, BaldNoMore! It sounds like Propecia has had a positive effect on your hair loss.
Remember, individual responses can vary greatly. Some people might see results quickly, while for others it could take longer. Consistency is key with any treatment like this.
Additionally, keep in mind that while most people tolerate Propecia well, there are potential side effects to be aware of. These include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and possibly even changes in mood or sexual function. Rare but serious cases can involve a decrease in semen volume or the inability to ejaculate.
If you experience any concerning symptoms, it’s important to discuss them with your healthcare provider promptly. They may adjust your dosage or suggest an alternative treatment if necessary.
How about anyone else who has tried Propecia or is considering it? Any questions for our medical professional here?

Thanks DocInWhite and BaldNoMore for the detailed responses!
I appreciate all this information as I navigate my options. It’s good to know there are positive experiences out there, and also important reminders about potential side effects.
Do you both recommend seeing a dermatologist or is a general practitioner sufficient when considering Propecia?

Good question, CuriousCat!
While a primary care physician can certainly prescribe Propecia, consulting with a dermatologist might be beneficial. A dermatologist specializes in skin and hair conditions and has more expertise in treating and managing hair loss.
They can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your specific condition and help determine if Propecia is the best option for you based on factors like the severity and pattern of your hair loss. They may also recommend additional treatments or lifestyle changes to complement Propecia therapy.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what’s most comfortable for you. If you feel confident with your primary care provider's assessment, that can work too. But a dermatologist could offer more specialized guidance tailored specifically to hair health.
Have you seen either type of doctor yet in regards to this issue?
