Topic: Prednisone Dosage for Dogs - Need Advice!

PetLover4Ever:
Hi everyone! I recently took my dog to the vet because he was having some skin issues and inflammation. The vet prescribed him prednisone 20 mg, but I'm a bit worried about giving such a high dose to my little guy. He weighs only around 15 pounds. Can anyone share their experiences or advice on this? Thanks!

CanineCareGiver:
Hello PetLover4Ever! First off, don't worry too much—prednisone can be very effective for treating inflammation and skin conditions in dogs. The dosage is usually based on the dog's weight, but 20 mg does seem quite high for a small dog like yours. You might want to follow up with your vet about whether this dose needs to be split into smaller doses or given over several days instead of once daily.

FurryFriendFan:
I second CanineCareGiver’s advice. My last dog was on prednisone too, but she was much bigger and only needed it for a short time. It's important to monitor your pet closely while they're on the medication. Look out for any signs of side effects like increased thirst, urination, or changes in appetite.

PetLover4Ever:
Thanks FurryFriendFan! Yes, I will definitely keep an eye on him. He’s been pretty lethargic today, which I’m not sure if it's related to the medication.

CanineCareGiver:
Lethargy can indeed be a side effect of prednisone. If you notice that he becomes very sluggish or shows any other concerning symptoms, it would be best to reach out to your vet as soon as possible. They might suggest reducing the dose or adjusting the schedule to see if it improves his energy levels.

FurryFriendFan:
Also, make sure to give him plenty of water and keep an eye on how much he drinks. Prednisone can cause increased thirst and urination, so having a good supply of fresh water is important.

PetLover4Ever:
Thank you both for the advice! I will definitely monitor his behavior and contact my vet if any symptoms worsen. Does anyone have any tips on making sure he swallows the pill? He's pretty stubborn about taking medication.

CanineCareGiver:
Haha, that’s a common issue! You can try hiding it in something he really loves, like peanut butter or a piece of cheese. Or you could get some pill pockets from your local pet store—they are like treats with a cavity for the pills. Just make sure to ask your vet if there's anything specific to avoid.

FurryFriendFan:
Another tip is to crush it and mix it into his food. Some dogs will eat it that way without noticing, but you need to be careful he eats all of the mixture so he gets the full dose.

PetLover4Ever:
Those are great tips! I’ll try hiding it in some cheese first and see how that goes. Thank you both for your help and support!

CanineCareGiver:
You’re welcome, PetLover4Ever! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or concerns. And remember to follow up with the vet to ensure everything is going as it should.

FurryFriendFan:
Absolutely! Your dog’s health is important, and being proactive in managing his condition will help him feel better soon. Take care!
