Hey everyone! I recently picked up some doxycycline from a reputable pharmacy in Mexico while traveling. It’s supposed to prevent malaria and I’m wondering if anyone else has used it? Is there anything specific I should know?

Hello HealthyHiker! That's a great question. Doxycycline is commonly prescribed for malaria prophylaxis, especially in regions like Mexico where the risk of malaria can vary depending on which area you're visiting.

Could you provide more details about your travel plans and the specific dosages you are considering? It would help me to give you a more personalized response regarding the usage and potential side effects. Stay safe!

Hi DrMedic8, thanks for your quick response! I’m visiting several areas including Oaxaca and Chiapas. I plan to take the doxycycline at a dose of 100 mg daily as per my travel health advisor’s recommendation. Could you shed some light on what side effects I might experience or precautions I should take?

Hello HealthyHiker! For malaria prophylaxis, your dosage sounds correct for doxycycline. The usual recommended dose is indeed 100 mg taken once daily.

Some common side effects you might encounter include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Sun sensitivity (you’ll need to use sunscreen and cover up more than usual)

It's also important to note that doxycycline can interact with certain foods and medications, so try to avoid taking it with milk products or antacids. You should take your dose either an hour before meals or two hours after.

Lastly, ensure you continue the medication for 4 weeks after returning from Mexico to cover any potential delayed infections.

Feel free to ask more questions if needed!

DrMedic8, I’m traveling with HealthyHiker and we’re concerned about sun sensitivity. Are there specific measures we should take besides using sunscreen?

Hi SunBurnSurvivor! Great question. In addition to applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) regularly, especially if you’re spending time outdoors, here are some additional tips:

  • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants.
  • Use wide-brimmed hats for extra coverage.
  • Stay in the shade during peak sun hours, usually between 10 AM and 4 PM.

These measures should help minimize your risk of sunburn. Doxycycline can increase sensitivity to both sunlight and artificial UV light (like tanning beds), so it’s crucial to be vigilant about protecting yourself while on this medication.

DrMedic8, this is really helpful info! I’m planning a trip soon and will be taking doxycycline as well. How long does the effect last after you stop taking it? Should I continue to use sunscreen even if I’ve already been back for some time?

Hi AdventureGal! The increased sensitivity from doxycycline typically resolves shortly after stopping the medication, but it’s still a good idea to continue using sunscreen and taking sun protection measures for at least 4 weeks post-treatment. This precaution will ensure that any lingering effects are minimized.

Remember, prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk of skin damage even without doxycycline, so maintaining good sun habits is always beneficial for overall health.

Enjoy planning your trip!
